Development Programme "Brijuni Rivijera" prompted the Republic of Croatia and the Istrian Region with the primary aim of evaluating the quality of the Brijuni archipelago with its hinterland. It is known that the islands and the coastal, primarily for historical reasons, in recent history, had a special status.
The area of the development programme “Brijuni Rivijera” includes three local self-government units, cities of Pula and Vodnjan and municipality Fažana.
Within the larger project location, coastline starts north from the forest Fažanska Pineta, continues with individual historical monuments and at the outmost southern end it finishes in a compact forest complex – the northern port of Pula.
Looking at the location longitudinally, it is mostly divided into natural or unbuilt-cultivated areas and urban and predominantly or partially built areas. This refers to the existing condition, but not to the planned one, which, under relevant documents, is similarly defined as parts of buildable and parts of unbuildable, free space (natural or cultivated landscape).
The different physiognomy, development potential, spatial and landscape features require the differentiation of parts of this location. Within each narrower spatial unit it is possible to recognise some spatial elements as dominant ones, together with different secondary elements (beach bays, coastal forests, fortifications, populated back-coast, cultural-historical units and localities, agricultural and forested back-coast).
The primary development goal is to realise a spatial and functional unit with the physiognomy of a tourist “riviera”, providing a high quality of ambient and offer with positive economic and social effects. Together with and equally important is to restore devastated parts, preserve and improve natural and existing values of this area.
The development programme “Brijuni Rivijera“ will directly include only a part of the area and some localities, but the whole is composed of other surfaces, settlements and structures, which indicates coordinated action of all stakeholders and spatial users.
